Sacramento County deputies are probing a gun violence incident that took place on the evening of April 18 at the Howe Community Park area while Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispersing an unlawful assembly of a crowd of several hundred.
How It Started
Deputies first arrived at the Arden-Arcade park at approximately half past six in the evening after getting calls of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Following that, a second call came in about a potential altercation occurring near the park.
Aerial units was sent to survey the area but could not confirm any ongoing fight. Regardless, it was apparent that hundreds of people had gathered without authorization without official sanction.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Deputies started clearing the unauthorized gathering by surrounding the park and issuing commands over loudspeakers telling the hundreds present to vacate the area. About 15 minutes were spent for the crowd to leave.
As the crowd was being cleared that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition echoed through the night. The rapid succession of shots triggered a stampede. Law enforcement quickly moved to looking for those injured.
Four Gunshot Victims
In total, four individuals were found to have been shot. The shooting victims — comprising three men and one woman all reportedly in their mid to late twenties — were rushed to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Hospital staff confirmed that two victims were in serious condition, one sustained moderate wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. According to authorities, all four were expected to survive.
Sacramento Metro Fire assisted at the location and aided in treating shooting victims at the park.
Physical Evidence
Most of the gunfire was determined to have been concentrated near Cottage Way adjacent to the Home Depot at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Law enforcement investigators recovered extra shell casings scattered along Cottage Way. Projectile impacts were discovered in the more info wrought iron fence bordering the Home Depot store. These discoveries suggested that at least one shooter had been firing southward from along Cottage Way aimed at the Home Depot building and parking lot. The Home Depot was temporarily locked down as a precaution. Crime scene technicians and detectives continued working well into the night.
Suspects Detained
Details gathered through scanner monitoring confirmed that a Kia was contacted by law enforcement in an area within Solano County. Four people were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Law enforcement units were traveling to Solano County to bring the suspects back for further questioning. Footage analyzed by investigators made clear that two individuals had fired weapons.
